I watched 3 songs of a live Green Day performance on VH1 last week. I didn’t know any of the songs they were playing; I haven’t been a Green Day fan for almost 10 years now.
I pointed out to Holly that a Green Day song sounds like a Green Day song from the moment you hear it, whether you’ve ever heard it before or not.
You could argue that it’s because: “All Green Day songs sound the same… “
But that would be an incomplete assessment.

Green Day sounds like Green Day because they’ve discovered their signature riff. Most Green Day songs feature a certain chord progression, a distinctive tonality, and a unique rhythmic approach that let you know within 10 seconds:
This is a Green Day song.

Is that the mark of a good band, or a boring band?
Depends on your preference.

But having a signature riff is definitely the mark of a good preacher (or at least all of the preachers I look up to).
In other words, all the preachers I enjoy listening to address many topics in many ways. But there’s always one signature motif that makes their preaching special. They always carry one primary burden and see God’s Kingdom from one special angle. And their unique angle gives them a distinctive voice…

I believe that every single follower of Christ (I’m done talking to the preachers now) has a signature riff too. A certain something that makes your contribution unique. A dimension of God that you see differently than the rest of us do.

What are some of the signature riffs some of your most influential mentors?
What is yours?
