Spontaneous Baptisms

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how God reveals His will to us.
When I ask God for direction, I’d like Him to unfold His celestial map. Then I’d like him to stick a YOU ARE HERE pin at the coordinates of my current location. Next I’d like Him to trace the route from where I am to where He wants me to go, along with 3 alternate routes in case there are any unexpected detours, or the back roads are too bumpy for me. Finally, I’d like Him to be on standby in case I need to tap into His Triple A services. You know, in case I get a flat tire or run out of gas.
In my opinion, this would be a wonderful way for God to lead me and guide me.

Instead, God is more like a GPS. He doesn’t trace out the entire route for me to see. He punches in the destination, and then He gives turn by turn directions… just one turn at a time. And you’d better be paying attention, because He usually tells you your next turn less than a mile before it comes up.

He tells Abraham: “Go to the land I will show you… “
No street address, not even a zip code. Just hit the road, and I’ll tell when to make your next turn.

I shared Sunday that walking with God is somewhat like riding a jet ski. You have to hit the gas in order to make a turn. This is counter intuitive, because with most vehicles, you hit the brakes, and then make your turn. God wants you to be in forward motion, headed in the right direction, and as you accelerate, He’ll navigate.

You know what I love about God’s GPS-like characteristics? Even if I miss the turn because I wasn’t paying attention, He can redirect me. Because He’s guiding me based on the ultimate destination that He intends for me to reach… and He has alternate routes I know nothing about.

I’m not completely sure of why God chooses to guide us this way. But I think it has something to do with the fact that He’s just as interested in the journey as the destination. And as we depend on Him turn by turn, day by day, we worship Him for who He is, not just where He’s taking us.
