Yep. I know the saying is finish what you started.
I’m thinking something different.
I’m thinking about Galatians 3:3:
Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?
I know Paul wrote this in the context of Christians who were trying to keep the law instead of accepting their salvation by faith in Christ alone.
But it spoke to me in a different context this morning.
This morning I was talking with our Children’s Pastor, Heather, (who’s dang good at her job) about our staff’s decision to fast one day this week.
We used to do this all the time (everyone on our core team fasted once a week leading up to our launch).
But then we launched. And a lot of people have been coming to Elevation.
A lot.
And we’ve been busy.
Planning.
Organizing.
Creating.
Brainstorming.
Assimilating.
Just plain trying to keep up.
And I think there has been a temptation at times to
Attain the goal that began with the Spirit
with human effort.
Don’t get me wrong. We still pray together. We know our help comes from God. We ask Him for wisdom and we feel like we’re in the center of His will.
But I do sense sometimes that we need to regain that raw edge we had when we started. That desperation for God. The deep down knowledge that God is the only hope for Elevation Church. And the rest that comes from knowing that He is the one building this church. (Matthew 16:18)
Rocky fans, remember what Apollo Creed told Rocky in Rocky III?
He told him he needed to go back to his roots.
To regain the eye of the tiger.
To get away from the bright lights and hype and focus on the basics.
God is calling me back to this personally.
A new level of intensity and simplicity.
And I’m excited. I’ll be posting some of the things that God shows me on my fast day this week.
Eye of the tiger baby.
